AYAWARA was started 15 years ago with co-founders Erick V. Mauricia and Bruno Lowit.
We are a group of people living in the Glasgow area and sharing the same interest in this wonderful traditional music and dance. We are a perfect example of a “melting pot”: our origines range from West African to Scottish… including French, Czech, Nigerian, in past also Slovak, Spanish, Latvian, Irish, English, Slovenian, Guyanese and Italian!
The name AYAWARA is a combined word from two different ethnic languages of Ghana and Mali. AYA is a symbol of confidence and literally means “the fern”, a defiant plant which will grow anywhere, whilst WARA translates to “the wild beast”. We are certainly not defiant and wild by nature, but our performances produce a rhythmic and colourful dancing feast that is enjoyable for all!
